This coming Sunday, our students will showcase what they have been working on over the past months. Young and old, beginners and advanced players, together and solo – everyone contributes to a festive program full of music and joy.

The past months have been filled with practice, and you will hear the results in a varied program. Of course, some well-known Christmas hits will not be missing. For this special occasion, we have also put together a small orchestra in which students and teachers perform together with atmospheric Christmas songs.

Two parts

The Christmas concert will take place in the hall of De Omval in Diemen and consists of two parts:

• First part: starts at 3:00 PM
• Second part: starts at 4:30 PM

Come and enjoy a warm musical afternoon and be surprised by the versatility of our students and teachers.

Hosted by well-known Dutch entertainer André van Duin, the show is a music talent competition created especially for performers aged 50 and older. Out of hundreds of applicants, only 23 seats were available: 20 for instrumentalists and 3 for vocalists. Contestants—ranging from former professionals to passionate amateurs—compete to form a unique pop-symphonic orchestra. The orchestra is conducted by Maurice Luttikhuis, with Francis van Broekhuizen and Ruben Hein on the jury. The program has been airing on NPO 1 since August 3 and can also be watched on NPO Start.

Gabriëlle Butler is no stranger to the music world. After finishing high school, she earned diplomas at the Conservatory of Enschede (studying with Jaap van Zweden) and the Conservatory of Utrecht (with Viktor Liberman). She has performed with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and the Radio Philharmonic Orchestra. Since 2019, she has been part of Muziekschool Diemen, where she teaches violin with passion and mentors young talents on their path toward conservatory studies.

Remarkably, Gabriëlle’s participation began with a student’s encouragement. “I love making music together, so I thought: I’ll give it a try,” she explains. Despite a difficult period in 2014, when she suffered a neck fracture, Gabriëlle never lost her love of music. Her perseverance and talent have now led to this wonderful achievement.

Kim Schimmel gives varied courses in which children lay a valuable foundation for their further musical development.

Music Orientation is mainly aimed at the very beginning and everyone from group 3 and 4. Music theoretical subjects such as notation, measure & rhythm, are alternated and combined with singing, playing instruments, listening games and movement. Different music styles are used.

The course focuses on cheerfulness and stimulation of social development. This is done by learning to listen to each other, playing together and moving. In addition, after taking these lessons, students have priority for placement within the regular lesson offer in the following season.

The Music orientation lessons will be at: Monday afternoons between 15:30 and 18:00 and on Wednesday afternoons between 15:00 and 18:15. The exact times will be announced later. The lessons are given in room 2.1 of Theater de Omval.

There are 16 lessons of 45 minutes each. The costs are €165. The lessons have already started in September 2024.

We traditionally closed 2024 with a festive Christmas concert.

Creating music by yourself is a joy, but joining forces to experience the rhythm and becoming part of something larger makes the music come alive. During our weekly rehearsals, we dive into perfecting our sound, attitude, arrangements, and, most importantly, ensemble play. Bands are crafted based on musical tastes, skill levels, and age groups. We play the tunes you love and aim for live performances, events, and perhaps even recording sessions!

The lessons
Experience shows that both young and old enjoy the lessons, but especially the opportunity to make music with others. The cello is a social instrument. However, one can also play solo. The lessons follow a thorough curriculum, in which General Music Education, music theory and ensemble playing are also worked on. Musical enjoyment is paramount. The lessons can be obtained in small groups or individually in consultation with the teacher. For example; three students in one hour. Advantages of group lessons are: more lesson time, less fear of failure, many opportunities to play together and more fun. The groups are composed of students of the same level. Lessons are given for both beginners and advanced levels.

With the cello you can also play in one of the string ensembles that we have at Muziekschool Diemen. The String Ensemble and the Junior String Ensemble for the very youngest.
